Skies are usually clear at night at the ranch. When there is no moon, I can see my shadow from the starlight.
When the moon is full, down on the farm, you can read by it.
These fotos (click to enlarge) are a good example of how bright a full moon can be with no competing light for miles and miles.
In the northern hemisphere, full moons all have names. This moon would be called the Hunter´s Moon, up north. As it is spring here in Argentina, I suppose you could equate it with the Grass Moon.
Was it a "Blue Moon?" Nope, that´s next month.
What´s a blue moon? ...that depends on who you talk to. Every month, there is a full moon but, sometimes, there´s more than one. Some people consider that "extra" moon to be a blue moon.
A real blue moon is an extra moon that occurs within a season. Seasons have three months and, usually, three full moons. If a season has four full moons ...the third one is called a blue moon. That way, the fourth one gets to keep it´s name ...like Harvest Moon, Beaver Moon, Storm Moon.
The next full moon you see ...will be a Blue Moon. What´s the big deal? Well, it only happens about 7 times every 19 years. "Once in a Blue Moon", and all that.
But a Blue Moon is also associated with weird things. That could be because we get the word for this moon from an Old English word, "belewe" ...which could also mean "believe" or "betray".
