Not that I have much of a sweet tooth... but the recent disappearance of sugar (as well as rice and polenta and other yummy, low on the food chain goodies) is a disturbing result of the pressures on farmers at the production end ...and attempts to hold supermarket prices down until election day.
The wholesale or bulk prices on the above commodities are not regulated. Entonces, processors and others that buy in large quantities are not experiencing shortages. But for you and I who are just looking for a kilo or so at the regulated supermarket price ...we're finding the cupboards bare when wheeling our carts down certain aisles.
If you like to cook from scratch like I do, this can be a real pain. And don't forget that some of your favorite eateries in your neighborhood don't have the wherewithal nor the storage space to buy nor stock large quantities of these staples.
I'm hoping this phenomenon won't spread to the last few non-processed foods that still live on our lower supermarket shelves ...but I'm not optimistic.

Which stores are you noticing being low on staples?
We were just in Coto today and they are well stocked on everything.
But now I am going back tomorrow to buy extras!
I have been baking a lot of things from scratch since I have a sweet tooth that kind of misses some things here .. Serious chocolate desserts to name one.
I have started to feel the urges to hoard while living here anyway- they quit selling my favorite mayonnaise, I can't find my favorite over priced rice.. except out on Puerto Madero .. always an adventure here, no ?
chau, C
The sugar shortage I've noticed a few places downtown and Retiro. The rice and polenta story I just saw on TV this evening.
No hoarding!
Mike
So today I thought , since we were at EST for coffee, we would run around to Uriburu to the Disco and get some extra sugar lol
They are striking. Police and strikers all over the place. No idea if this is all Disco markets but there went my quick stop for some sugar.
I will grab extra at my little markets near home.
chau !
Mike,
The Best market near us is being changed to another Carrefours Express. So I went to a nearby Chinese Market for something I needed and learned that if you find rice and polenta running short near you, look in a Chinese Market ! I got extra sugar too. No, not hoarding but if you need some, you can borrow a cup :)
chau ~
Was the Disco that went on strike the one on Uriburu and Arenales? My wife said they were completely out if butter the other day which sounded weird. Maybe that was on the regulated price list? When is Cristina going to learn economics 101, government imposed price controls lead to shortages!
I'm actually a supporter of "government imposed price controls" as being a good short-term solution for those times in which markets cannot regulate themselves.
Those controls only buy a limited amount of time, however. Once bought, that time should be spent toward making policy changes that will allow markets to serve people.
We could really use a cohesive agricultural policy. Short-term price controls have helped keep a lid on things. If we wait much longer, though, we could all end up with something no one wants nor wanted.
