Las Tortillas de Pancho Villa

Real Mexican tortillas, hand made from start to finish, right here in downtown Buenos Aires.

I can´t describe how good these are.  They are everything you know and love about tortillas ...and probably a lot more.  Tortillas made this way are becoming a lost art even in Mexico.

Gabriela came to Buenos Aires with her Argentine husband from Mexico about four years ago.  After enduring a major tortilla jones, she began dust off her family skills and make real tortillas for her husband and friends in the small Mexican community here.  They were a hit ...and now we yanquis can reap the benefits of her increased production.

Gab and her husband don´t whip up batches of thin polenta pancakes ...nor do they mix up a bunch of dried masa flour.

They nixtamalize good Argentine corn in the old Aztec manner, they hand grind it, and shape them by hand.  It´s actually a matter of national patrimony for Gabriela and Pablo (see video).  It´s amazing that we NOW can actually get better tortillas in Buenos Aires than most people in Mexico.

You don´t need to be an aficionado to appreciate it, either.  The skill, effort, and old-time method comes through in that flavor you might remember from a small Mexican village.  If you don´t have any memories like that ...go git some.

And do it before they raise their prices!  Right now, they´re practically giving them away.  Alan Patrick showed up at Drinking Liberally with a kilo ...they are so cheap, he was embarrased to ask for less.

As for myself, under the gise of a world famous journalist, I boldly asked to purchase a half a key.  No problem.  Super good!  I ran home and slathered a few with my homemade frijoles refritos, a few veggies, and some Salsa El Tejano.  Feast.

Now, even I can´t eat a half a kilo of tortillas, no matter how good they are.  So after noshing to my heart's delight, I tossed the rest directly into the freezer while they were still so dreamily fresh.  A few days later, I pulled 'em out and put them to the test.  They passed with flying colors.  From frozen to a hot skillet, they tasted just as marvelous.

So whaddya waitin' for?  Give 'em a call ...or befriend them on facebook ...or go to their website and use their handy order form.  Yum!
