Squirrel Alert in Buenos Aires!

Squirrels in Argentina?  I´ve never seen one.  Neither has my wife.  They are not native to here.

But they´re heeeeere ...and are becoming a problem in the Province of Buenos Aires along the Luján River where they are chewing up telephone lines and TV cables, according to La Nación.

It seems that three pairs were introduced into the area 25 years ago by a Belgian.  They are the reddish type and are thought to be the same species as squirrels from Thailand to Taiwan.

Everybody loves squirrels!   And argentinos are no exception.  Residents in the area began to notice the furry little cuties and loved the way they hang upside down from branches while eating nuts and fruits.  The problem begins with their natural taste for latex ...which supposedly is why they sometimes go for wires and cables.  There´s also worry that they could plague farms and orchards and take food away from native species of wildlife.

Argentina is no stranger to exotic species being released into her wilds.  Beavers were actually imported by the government in the 1940´s to establish a fur industry in Tierra del Fuego.  Without their natural predators, however, they´ve become a big problem for the forests there.

Ah man, not red squirrels! Like any Wisconsite, I know that red squirrels are only good for chewing on things. If you want the cute harmless squirrels then you have to go for the grey ones :)

Nice squirrels. Maybe Anthony Bourdain can whip up a nice squirrel stew.
