Pizzería Angelín

from: The Authentic Bars, Cafés and Restaurants of Buenos Aires by Gabriela Kogan

"Tradition has made some places sacrosanct; places that are part of the history of Buenos Aires and its people.  Angelín Pizzería exemplifies this.  It was founded in 1905 on Avenída Córdoba  bordering the trendy Palermo Viejo neighborhood, where the Maldonado Canal was the boundary of the city - and of decency - toward the end of the nineteenth centruy.  A proster inside states that they ae the creators of pizza canchera, a huge cheeseless pizza meant to be shared among friends after football matches.  When the football matches are broadcast on television, Angelín is as crouded as ever.

The place is bustling, full of men, and almost gloomy, but its pizzas and empanadas transcend the fashionable trends of the area.  Porteños enjoy eating at the bar over looking the street.  The famous trio "moscato, pizza, y fainá" find their raison d'etre here.

Empanadas, fainá, fugazas, and fugazzetas are the favorites among grandfathers, sons, and grandsons who make this their hangout.  Many of them have left the neighborhook, but come back in search of the inmistakable taste and the irreplaceable owner."
