The Skinny on Springtime Turkeys

Lot´s of recent inquiries regarding deelicious fresh turkeys for expat Thanksgiving spreads ...so here goes the straight dope on November turkeys in Argentina:

1. Nobody wants a tom (male) turkey ...they are thought to be tough.
2. Free-range turkeys hens (females) don´t taste good in the spring because they are nesting.
3. When the hens nest, they rarely leave their nest even for food and water.
4. That´s the big difference between an autumn hen who has fattened herself as much as possible in anticipation of winter.

...and 5. Although, you could probably eat and enjoy a scrawny springtime hen ...there is one more problem  ...the turkey farmer would have to pull the hen away from her nest and lose all the eggs (potential turkeycitos) in addition to the hen herself.

Factory-farm turkeys are largely detached from that reproductive cycle.

Frozen turkeys can be good if they haven´t gone thru any thaw/refreezing.

But why not eat turkey in the Argentine autumn?

Although spring is mild here in Argentina, all the hearty foods we associate with harvest-time don´t seem to really go with the glorious warm weather.

How 'bout an Argentine Thanksgiving Day?

Although, I can imagine why ...it strikes me as strange that such an agricultural country has no harvest holiday.

Whaddya say?  Once the weather turns chilly again, how 'bout an expat pot-luck with all those wonderful, heavy foods we all miss?
