Stars over Jupiter-Saturday-Jupiter Field-Cloudy and cold-
Out with a vengeance and in full force, the Shankees hit the suburbs to battle the 7-1 Jupiter squad of Ciudad Evita. “You never know what you’re gonna get on a Saturday of Shankees baseball, but sometimes the stars come out,” stated Skipper Paul Perry after his team’s 12-1 offensive and defensive romping of one of the league’s top teams. The Shankees set the tone off the get-go. Sam Brinkley was back in action for the Shankees and led off with a cool walk. He quickly scored off a double by the always dangerous two-hitter Ruben Bravo; still on the lookout for any Krazy Koreans lurking. Zack Karson also drew a walk and quickly jogged home after a monster ground rule double by Jonathan "2x" Cantrell, the first of many for the Shanks who dropped bombs all day, with 7 ground rule doubles soaring into the steady flow of traffic just beyond the left field fence. In fact, one by Jorge Gutierrez almost hit a bus, another by Jimmy Ray Jr. almost landed in the Parilla on the other side of the road. Even German Giant David Raudonat rocked a double and drove in a run. In all, the Shankees amassed a total of 12 runs off a bunch of hits. (Official stats not yet available)- Defensively, the Shankees were led by Williams College pitcher Jimmy Ray Jr., who set a new all-time Shankee pitching record by striking out 15 batters in only 6 innings. He breaks lefty Ace Andrew Terry’s 13 Ks in 11 innings and Eddie “The Ace” Nadel’s previous record of 12 Ks in 8. By way of his dominating speed and control, Jimmy carried a no hitter throughout six, and only gave up one run all day. He also hit three straight doubles and had two stolen bases. Sam Brinkley, who caught for Jimmy Ray Jr. after starting catcher Jeff Greenhouse cut his finger and had to leave the game in the second inning, took the mound in the 7th. Brinkley showed good command and was backed by two spectacular defensive plays by Zack Karson at short, who chased down a pair of dead quails in shallow left and center to end the game. With this solid victory, the Shankees sent a clear message to the rest of the A2 teams; “When the stars are out, the Shanks will shine”.- Buttermaker gameball: Jimmy Ray Jr. for his sensational pitching performance and record breaking day. Shot of bourbon: To Fred of SilverStar Transport, official Shankee sponsor, who got the boys to the game.- Adios Amigos. Jack Green reporting for the Shankee Press.
