You think you are a US expat?

Not unless you are outside the US for more than 330 days in any 12 months.

That's something to consider.

. . . FOR PURPOSES OF THE HEALTH CARE BILL. Amusing how health care is an issue of vital national interest until something in the bill negatively affects the blog's author personally, then it's "'kill the bill". Human nature I guess.

No... that's not quite true. Actually, it's a version of a pretty standard test used for years by the IRS to determine whether you can defer foreign income. The Senate bill will be a pretty sharp reminder of it, though.

Sorry that I gave you the impression that if my ox is gored I'm suddenly opposed. I'm actually all for health care reform and I know that it will be expensive.

Full disclosure: I never have trouble fulfilling the 330 day requirement. I'm really an immigrant rather than an expat.

I would rather pay (although, I can exclude myself) into a real US national health care system ...even if I couldn't use it a la Medicare.

But I do oppose the Senate bill which without a doubt the House will be unable to alter.

A bill this bad will sour the US public on health care reform for a long time. The Republican party can say they unanimously voted against it although they themselves forced everything good out of the bill. That won't bode well for Democrats in the next few election cycles.

It almost seems that we Democrats are hoping for a wave of dissatisfaction with the bill in order to amass support for reforming it later.

I think that wave could sweep us from our majorities ...then allow the Republicans to repeal it much to the relief of most US citizens.

Yeah, so I guess I'm safe with 9 and a half years under my belt.

Yep, I'm not too far behind you.

But watch out if you find yourself having to spend 35 days back in good ol' USA ...you'll have to pay the penalty for not having health insurance from a private US company.

Thank goodness that my health insurance here covers me for up to 3 months internationally, including the good ole U S of A. :)

I hope that keeps you from getting a "penalty" for not having bought it from a US company.

Let's keep in touch on this, eh?

besos,
Mike

They're charging penalties?? WTF?? Well, considering I haven't technically worked for the last 9 I haven't paid taxes either....kind of hard to pay taxes if you're not earning anything. Who knows....I'll probably be locked up in a federal prison before too long...LOL!
