As is always the case when my idols die, I want to say something, but can't think of the right words, but still feel I have to say/write something anyway. So I did.
Well, I give up. Spent the past two or three hours trying to make some sense out of all this. It'd take weeks to read all the posts on this site. It'd take months to read all the posts on the other blogs. I haven't got the time nor the will.
The bloggers and commenters (mostly anonymous) who criticize you seem extremely resentful and that's what I just don't understand. Why are those people living down there if there's so much to complain about (crime, pollution, bad food, poor living conditions in general)?
While they accuse you of sugar-coating, every post they publish seems to be about some negative aspect of the country, the locals, the politics. One of the bloggers describes Argentina as an extremely dangerous place to live in a post he wrote last year. Another talked about how unfriendly locals are to foreigners, especially Americans.
I just can't imagine an American living in such "dangerous" and "unfriendly" place by choice. It just makes no sense. And to write endlessly about it makes even less sense. Oh well...
Mike, I just read (twice) what you wrote on November 17th, 2006 ("con la frente marchita..las nieves del tiempo...") and the comment by Juan. I especially enjoyed reading about how the elderly are completely integrated into the activity of their city and what you said in the P.S.
I blame myself for not explaining it better than I do.
I would never want to prohibit the hate speech that some people spew about Buenos Aires and Argentina.
I would, however, like to expose them.
Especially when they pretend they are from Argentina... and are not.
Especially when they pretend that they are (past or present) expats... and are not.
Especially when they pretend that they are a group... and they are not.
Especially when they pretend to be moderators or site-admins... and are actually fomentors of hate speech for profit.
If they would only... voluntarily... self-identify themselves, I would have no beef with them.
Of course, they wouldn't last very long if they told the world that they were vomiting their invective from some ticky-tacky suburban 2-bedroom in the middle of the Minnesota winter.
This year will mark my 4th year here as an immigrant... not a tourist, not an expat.
I love this place and its people more than ever and have never regretted coming here to live.
It's big, cultured, safe, beautiful, fun, and filled with terrific people with a wonderful outlook on life here and abroad... and the weather is IMHO better than Hawaii.
Anybody who lives here is lucky.
And anybody who is a guest... yes, a guest... of these fine people should try to behave themselves at least a little.
...and anybody who pretends to be here while denigrating Buenos Aires in anonymous internet posts... well, you can imagine the lives they must lead.
...and anyone who makes a buck giving sociopaths like that a forum... well, they deserve the sanitizing light of day. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you can help me explain this better, I'm all ears.

I loved him. We shared the same birthday in the same city.
A terrible loss.

So it goes.
I have come to your blog after reading about your intolerance from others.
Life is to short to be filled with hate for others who are from other cultures and beleifs.

I am sure that you are a fake and just trying to sing the praises of a committed fascist.
For your information Im not an expatriate, Im Argentinian and beleive in full democracy .
A new dictatorship is coming aided and supported by people like you .
You, an Argentine? Yeah, right. A louse is what you are.
If you think that vitriol is going to scare me away, think again. Go find someone who gives tinker's cuss about your opinion.
Thanks, Dana.
